Alternatives to a Nursing Home

from: Kyle Besser

One worry in the back of the minds of many senior citizens is that some day their children will put them in a nursing home. The aversion to the idea of going to a nursing home goes back decades, probably to the days when a nursing home was really the only alternative when a senior needed daily medical care. It hasn't been that long since the phrase, "going to a nursing home" was equivalent to being put out to pasture to wait for death in the minds of many senior citizens.

The real concern for many senior citizens has always been that their own children would become tired of caring for them and put them in a nursing home to get them out of the way. So we have the concept of terrible living conditions, loss of freedom, home and friends and rejection by the family that builds up into fear as seniors move through their golden years.

Even today there are some horrible nursing homes out there. That occasional story about nursing home abuse that seems to get a lot of attention in the media doesn't help the conception that nursing homes are bad. The good news, though, is that today there are a lot more options available to senior citizens for finding a place to live after they have to leave their home where they can get the care they need without having to go to a nursing home.

In the last 10 to 20 years, the field of elder care has undergone what can only be described as a revolution. Now, instead of nursing homes being the only option, there are assisted living facilities, managed care facilities, senior independent living communities where seniors can continue to live a life of freedom and independence but still have as much care as they need and only when they need it.

An assisted care facility can work almost exactly like an apartment complex or condominium. Depending on what kind of care is needed, the directors of assisted care facilities can custom design how much care is needed and nothing more. This way a lot of the daily chores that seniors have trouble performing are taken care of and the senior can enjoy their golden years longer. Typically an assisted care facility will do the laundry, provide for food and help with special diets. They also provide security both for safety and that someone is always around to look in on you should a problem arise.

This can be a tremendous relief to the family and to seniors that they don't have to worry about falling and not having help. The staff at assisted care homes are there to help seniors and support them only as much as needed. Seniors thus can live an independent life knowing that help is nearby if they need it. There are medical people on call should they be needed.

The great thing about these facilities is that as more care is needed over the years, the services can be added gradually on an as needed basis and the senior does not have to move or change lifestyle. This truly is the best of both worlds because seniors can live as independently as they can but have help on call when they need it. But the one thing you can say about it is that it is not a nursing home!
